“The convergence of the Creative Industries and emerging technology, in the form of CreaTech, has emerged as a compelling and necessary force for economic, cultural, and social growth in the UK”
– CreaTech Coronation Challenge, 2025
At the University of Westminster, we’re at the forefront of this revolution, shaping the future of creative education and working to ensure that our students can make the most of the new opportunities available to them using emerging technologies in the creative industries.
A Legacy of Innovation
Westminster has always pioneered the integration of creativity and technology, from early photography and film production to cutting-edge digital media. As new and emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, Virtual Production, Motion Capture, Extended Reality, 3d Fabrication, and Game Engines are transforming the creative landscape and future careers, we’re equipping students with the skills to lead in tomorrow’s creative industries.
CreaTech in Practice
The CreaTech project is a cross-college initiative to develop our curriculum and facilities, and to embed next-generation technologies and CreaTech skills within our courses. We're redefining creative education through industry partnerships, research collaborations, and hands-on learning, and working across disciplines to create innovative teaching and learning models and projects using these technologies.
Specialised Facilities
Students can explore emerging technologies in dedicated facilities, including the Emerging Media Space & Games Hub, Physical Computing Lab, Virtual Production training pod and Motion Capture studio at the Harrow Campus. They can borrow specialised equipment to use off-site or in one of our production studios and facilities. They can also use the Fabrication Lab and XR Studio at the Marylebone and Cavendish campuses.
Learning Approaches
Students can engage with these technologies through their courses, where they are embedded in specialised modules. They might alternatively take elective modules to explore the new technologies while collaborating with other disciplines; this models the way in which the technologies are applied in industry, for example, in Virtual Production, which requires large multi-disciplinary teams. They can also attend workshops and sandbox sessions in the dedicated spaces.
Students have opportunities to work with industry to develop these skills, for example, the Creative Hackathon with Actress and Singer Josie Ho in 2024, which brought together Fashion, Film, Creative Media Arts to work together on activities in Josie Ho’s metaverse. In 2024/25 our students have worked on projects with Toasted Productions, exploring augmented reality in live events. We also host talks and guest lectures such as the Virtual Realisms series.
CreaTech Priorities in Development
- Emerging Technologies and Advanced Digital Literacies project, funded by the Quintin Hogg Trust, a group of staff and students are co-creating innovative learning approaches for creative arts students. Six units to launch in 2025/26.
- Fashion CreaTech group (exploring emerging technologies in fashion ecosystems) and a project to develop our spaces for Virtual Production and Immersive activities.
- Expanded Virtual Production & Immersive Spaces to support new modules and courses.
- Short courses and micro-credentials partnering with industry.
