Learning by Doing

The Arts and Emerging Technologies subject area builds on the historic and rich legacy of trailblazing innovation within arts subjects at the University of Westminster. The courses within this subject area are focused on making and take a ‘learning by doing’ approach to creative practice by combining a focus on practice, critical theory, collaboration and experimentation, with all students engaging critically with technologies past and present.

Our Courses

This area encompasses a suite of well-established undergraduate courses including BA Creative Media Arts, BA Fine Art Mixed Media, BA Photography and BA Fashion Photography, as well as a series of postgraduate courses offerings; MA Art and Emerging Technologies, MA Global Contemporary Arts and MA Expanded Photography. The area also hosts a Foundation in Art and Design. All our courses engage with contemporary global concerns including the need to develop sustainable practices, and questions of social justice. We make sure that our students see work from artists that hail from the Global South.

This subject area is based in our spacious Harrow campus. We offer facilities and technical resources which we are confident are second to none. For example, we can offer studio space to our Fine Art students across all levels. Students on our Creative Media Arts course, meanwhile, can make use of our exciting and innovative Emerging Media Space, a purpose-built area dedicated to innovation and experimentation.

Creative Changemakers

We are proud to have fostered so many influential and famous artists and photographers over the years. Our graduates are today’s creative changemakers, with many of them forging careers as artists, curators, critics, writers, film producers, and educators. Alumni of both our Photography and Fine Art courses have gone on to exhibit in major galleries and museums, including PHotoESPAÑA, The Photographers’ Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery and the Barbican, to name but a few. Students from Photography have been shortlisted for and have won a host of prestigious photographic awards including the Photographic Portrait Prize, the Magnum Graduate Prize, and the Aperture First Photobook Prize. Students from Creative Media Arts have gone on to produce content for such household names as Adidas, Hugo Boss, Sony, and Google.
